LONG POND, Pa. -- Dale Earnhardt Jr. is having a blast again, with a shared bond with his crew, comfort in his own skin as NASCARs most popular driver, even finding fun 140 characters at a time on Twitter. Winning races sure has a way of easing burdens on Junior. Earnhardt turned Brad Keselowskis trash into Victory Lane treasure, pulling away down the stretch Sunday at Pocono Raceway for his second win of the season and a secured spot in the Chase field. He paired his first career win at Pocono with his Daytona 500 championship for his first multi-win season since 2004. "I feel like Im such a lucky guy to have this second opportunity again to be competitive," Earnhardt said. But for as strong as he ran in the No. 88 Chevrolet, Keselowski gift-wrapped this win when he yielded the lead with five laps left in a desperate attempt to clear debris from his grille and cool his overheated engine. Keselowskis gamble backfired -- he couldnt get the draft needed from the lapped traffic to clear his car and make one final pass for the win on Earnhardt. Keselowskis No. 2 Ford still had the oomph in the engine needed to finish the race, and he had his second-straight runner-up finish. "It was definitely a mistake because the engine made it," Keselowski said, rubbing his face. "It probably shouldnt have." Junior shook off the rising red gauges in the No. 88 that could have had his car meet a similar fate as Keselowski. "They were still within good reason to stand on it and give it hell," he said. Kurt Busch, Denny Hamlin and rookie Kyle Larson completed the top five. Earnhardt gave Hendrick Motorsports three straight wins, following back-to-back victories by Jimmie Johnson. Johnson overcame a pit road accident to finish sixth. Owner Rick Hendrick texted Earnhardt before the race to let him know he would not attend and would see him next week at Michigan. Earnhardt told him, "Ill drink one for you after its over." Earnhardt stuck to his end of the deal, spraying all types of beverages in a jubilant Victory Lane. Johnson was the first driver over to congratulate him. I dont have much to do tomorrow," Earnhardt said, grinning. "Tonights going to be a long one." Earnhardt, long NASCARs most popular driver, gave the Pocono crowd plenty of reason to go wild. He was mobbed by almost 100 fans outside the Pocono media centre, screaming his name and clamouring for a picture with the winner. He waved and ducked into a waiting car, whisked away for another party. Maybe the fans should try tweeting at him to earn his attention. A reluctant participant on Twitter for years, Earnhardt warmed fast to the social media site after winning Daytona. He said he underestimated the amount of fun hed have interacting with fans. He loved the "go get ems" that dot his feed, though its the "haters" that he really feeds off. "The real short ones, like, You suck, those are the best ones," he said, smiling. "I just favourite them and block them. Its so much fun." Earnhardts second win means he is guaranteed to make the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship field. He won for the 29th time in 519 career Sprint Cup starts. "When we won at Daytona, man, it made the rest of the year a lot more relaxing, a lot easier," he said. "It makes it fun because you can just go to the track and just race, not worry about points." Juniors breakthrough was more meaningful because has come in crew chief Steve Letartes final season. Letarte, who had a Pocono win with Jeff Gordon, has become one of Earnhardts best friends. That tightness off the track just may have sparked the wins on the track. "Maybe thats why him and I are such good friends, because I might be the only one in the world that doesnt wonder what its like to be Dale Junior," Letarte said. "Hes a normal guy, hes a great guy, hes a great talent. I dont have any idea what its like to be him." Earnhardt led three Hendrick drivers in the top 10; Gordon finished eighth. Johnsons bid for a third straight victory was derailed when he connected on pit road with Marcos Ambrose. Coming off wins in the Coca-Cola 600 and at Dover, Johnson was fifth when he pitted under yellow. Johnson hit Ambrose and spun 180-degrees, which forced him to back into his stall for more repairs. He needed two tires, had right-front damage and dropped to 29th on the restart. Busch posted his first top 10 since his win at Martinsville nine races ago. He salvaged a rough day for his team that saw fellow Stewart-Haas Racing drivers Tony Stewart and Kevin Harvick drop from contention with various issues. Stewart held the lead and was in great position late to win until he was busted for speeding on pit road and was dropped to 31st. Harvick was running second when had tire trouble. Stewart finished 13th, Harvick 14th, and SHRs Danica Patrick was 37th after she smacked the wall with 22 laps left. All those mishaps -- and one loose wrapper -- all made it a race to remember for Earnhardt. "A year or two ago, we werent running to seize the opportunity," Earnhardt said, "and now we are." LONDON -- Alexander Gustafsson handed Jimi Manuwa his first MMA defeat in the main event of the UFC Fight Night card at Saturday night at O2 Arena. Gustafsson controlled the first round after getting top position on a throw, and came out much more forcefully in the second, buckling Manuwa with a Muay Thai knee, and finishing him off with strikes on the ground. "I was so glad to get a decision because my last couple of fights have gone the distance," the Swede said. "Jimi Manuwa is a tough, powerful fighter, so my strategy was to try and wear him down a bit and drain that power. I got grazed a couple of times and you could definitely feel how hard he can throw. I want Jon Jones next; I cant wait to have another chance at him." Michael Johnson unanimously outpointed Melvin Guillard. Johnson landed a left hook and a kneelift in the second round, in the best of the limited action. "I wasnt going to leave myself exposed, so I fought a smart fight," Johnson said. "Ive got the best stand-up in this division, and Im willing to show that against anybody." While Brad Pickett hit four slams on Neil Seery, but struggled to land significant strikes or submission attempts from top position, and certainly lost out in the kickboxing battle. The Islanders captain scored three goals and added two assists, prized rookie Ryan Strome scored the first goal of his NHL career, and Kevin Poulin won in relief of injured starter Evgeni Nabokov in New Yorks 7-3 victory over the Dallas Stars on Monday night. After falling behind 2-0, the Islanders scored four times in the second period and carried a 4-3 lead into the third. "It was great, the intensity and pace we came out with in the second period," Tavares said. "Great to see not just a few guys get it going, but everyone really fed off the energy." Tavares scored his first at 7:29 of the second period off a terrific pass from Thomas Vanek. He added two more in the third, netting a power-play goal with 3:07 remaining to push the lead to 7-3. It was the captains 20th goal of the season. "A lot of people dream of those nights," Islanders coach Jack Capuano said. "Anytime (Tavares) has a night like that, its nice to win the hockey game." But the comeback victory came at a cost as starting goalie Evgeni Nabokov left with what appeared to be a groin injury. He was put on the injured list shortly after the game. The 38-year-old Nabokov returned to action on Dec. 14 after he missed 11 games because of a groin injury sustained against Detroit on Nov. 16. New York recalled goalie Anders Nilsson from Bridgeport of the AHL later Monday night. With the Islanders on the power play early in the second period and trailing 2-0, Strome got New York on the board by putting a wrist shot past goalie Kari Lehtonen. It took the 20-year-old Strome 11 NHL games to finally break the ice. He said it might have been the longest scoring drought he had endured, and he was starting to feel the pressure. "Its nice to get it out of the way," Strome said. "Hopefully, I can just start playing now. (It was) starting to bug me a little bit. I had a couple of great chances. Its a tough league to score. Youve got to take advantage of the opportunities." Peter Regin, Brock Nelson, and Brian Strait also added goals for the Islanders, who scored six times in a span of 24:38 and won for the fourth time in five games.ddddddddddddNew York won in regulation at home for the first time since Nov. 12. The Islanders were 2-6-4 in their previous 12 games at Nassau Coliseum. Poulin stopped 13 of 15 shots after replacing Nabokov at 12:54 of the first. Nabokov made seven saves on eight shots. Poulin will likely be back in the net Tuesday night when the Islanders begin a six-game trip at Toronto. Dallas built its 2-0 lead on first-period goals by Jamie Benn and Erik Cole, but Lehtonen couldnt make the margin stick. He allowed seven goals on 43 shots. "Thats probably the most disappointing (game) of the whole year," Stars coach Lindy Ruff said. "We were outskated. We couldnt win one-on-one battles. They basically looked how we usually look. Their legs were better. Their energy level was better. Their puck management was better. That might have been our worst game of the year. "It was a team giveaway." After Strome opened the scoring for the Islanders, New York tied it on a goal by Tavares 7:29 into the second. The Islanders took a 3-2 lead just two minutes later on Regins second of the season. Valeri Nichushkin then tied it for Dallas by scoring on a power play. But Brock Nelson capped off a frenetic second period by scoring with 28 seconds left to put the Islanders back on top 4-3. Tavares completed his hat trick by scoring at the 6:19 and 16:53 of the third period. Jamie Benn opened the scoring for Dallas 5:01 in, putting a backhander past Nabokov, but shortly after, Nabokov was forced to leave the game, and Poulin yielded the Stars second tally almost instantly when Cole coaxed a soft backhander in from just shy of the blue line. The Stars will remain in the tri-state area this week, visiting the New Jersey Devils on Thursday, and the New York Rangers on Friday before hosting the Islanders on Sunday. NOTES: New York forward Kyle Okposo missed the game due to the birth of his first child. ... Vanek had two assists to extend his point streak to nine games. ... CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Homer Bailey finally beat the Philadelphia Phillies -- and he has nobody but himself to thank. Bailey pitched eight effective innings and drove in the go-ahead runs as the Cincinnati Reds came from behind for a 4-1 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday. "The bullpen has picked me up so much this year that the big thing I wanted to do today was give them a day off," he said. Manager Bryan Price was happy to see his starter rewarded. "What an effort," Price said. "What impressed me most was he went out in the eighth with 108 pitches against the middle of their lineup. He wanted to be the guy. He was all in. He did what we needed him to do. He tastes the finish line. Theres something in that. Certainly, his two-run single was big." Billy Hamilton added a two-run homer for the Reds, who won their second straight against the reeling Phillies after a three-game losing streak. Bailey (7-3) allowed just six hits and one run with three walks and seven strikeouts while matching his season high in innings and picking up his first career win in five decisions over 10 games against Philadelphia. He threw a season-high 121 pitches, four short of tying his career high. The Phillies had at least one runner on base in six of those innings, but they couldnt capitalize enough to avoid their eighth loss in nine games. Manager Ryne Sandberg blamed a lack of "execution and focus." "I see potential now and then, but we need to be consistent," the first-year manager said. "Its all about chipping in and doing something every day." Aroldis Chapman struck out the side in the ninth for his ninth save. Rookie right-hander David Buchanan (1-3), making his fourth career start since being called up by Philadelphia on May 24, allowed six hits and four runs with six strikeouts in six innings. He also hit a batter while losing his third consecutive start. Trailing 1-0 in the fifth, Todd Frazier led off with a bloop single to centre field and went to third on Zack Cozarts opposite-field double down the right-field line. Against a drawn-in Phillies infield, Bailey grounded a two-run single up the middle, just out of reach of diving shortstop Jimmy Rollins. "I think a starting pitcher should at least be able to handle a bat," Bailey said. "At least put the ball in play -- get a fly ball or a seeing-eye single." Hamilton, hitless in his previous 12 at bats, followed with his second home run of the season, a 348-foot drive into the right-field seats on what he said was a full-count changeup. He wasnt sure it was going out. "I dont hit home runs," he pointed out. "Didnt you see me running? I was rolling. I looked up and Homer was right there." Buchanan wouldnt change either one of the pitches, he said. "I got the ground ball I wanted," he said about Baileys hit. "I left the changeup (to Hamilton) up. If its down and away, he doesnt hit it. I had conviction with that pitch. It was the right pitch." Philadelphia took a 1-0 lead in the third. Ben Revere and Jimmy Rollins singled with one out. Revere stole third and scored on Chase Utleys sacrifice fly. The Phillies, who saw two innings end with runners thrown out at the plate on Saturday, lost another runner at home in the fourth inning on Sunday. Domonic Brown was on third base with Carlos Ruiz on first and one out when Cesar Hernandez hit a chopper to third baseman Todd Frazier, who easily threw out Brown at the plate. Buchanan followed with an inning-ending fielders-choice grounder. Notes: Jimmy Rollins needs five hits to pass Hall of Famer Mike Schmidt for the Phillies career record after going 1-for-3 on Sunday. ... Cincinnatis Devin Mesoraco struck out three times while extending his career-long hitless streak to 17 at bats. ... Philadelphia wrapped up a stretch of 20 games in 20 days with a 6-14 record. Vucevic scored 24 points and grabbed 23 rebounds, and Jameer Nelson had five points in overtime as the Magic edged the Charlotte Bobcats 110-105 on Friday night. Aaron Afflalo, who finished with 17 points, sent the game into overtime with a 3-pointer with 7.6 seconds remaining as Orlando won its second straight. In overtime, Nelsons 3-pointer with 2:26 left put Orlando ahead for good. "I knew it would turn around," Vucevic said. "I kept my confidence high. I had all good looks," said Vucevic, who was 11-for 22 from the field. "A 15-16 point lead in this league is nothing. You have to keep fighting, grinding and thats what we did tonight." Vucevic, who recorded his fifth career game with 20 points and 20 rebounds, keyed a dominant rebounding effort (57-36) by Orlando. His first-half total of 16 matched Charlottes team total through two quarters. Orlando, which trailed during the first 44 minutes, took a 94-93 lead on an Afflalos free throw with 1:12 left. But Josh McRoberts, who had a career-high 24 points, drove the lane to put Charlotte ahead. Kemba Walker then hit a fadeaway jumper with 14.6 seconds left to put the Bobcats up three -- setting up Afflalos tying 3. "It was great fight by all of the guys," Orlando coach Jacque Vaughn said. "Whether it was the unit that started the fourth quarter and really got us going defensively to put up a 16-point quarter versus a team like that or the mental fight of Nik Vucevic, who starts out the game 4-for-14 and doesnt give in and wills his way and helps his team. Pretty impressive in a lot of different ways." The Bobcats looked as though they had escaped after Walkers final basket in regulation, but a defensive lapse gave Afflalo a look, and the game went to overtime. "All youve got to do is do what were supposed to do right there and the game ends. That was it," Charlotte coach Steve Clifford said. "We have to make one play that you make time after time and we didnt make the play.&quuot; Tobias Harris had 15 points for the Magic, while Victor Oladipo added 14 and Kyle OQuinn 13.ddddddddddddNelson, who missed the last four games with a sore knee, had 11. Walker matched McRoberts with 24 points for Charlotte, while Al Jefferson scored 20. Gerald Henderson added 14 and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist 10. "That was our biggest emphasis coming in: to get to the glass and be physical," Clifford said. "We werent willing to do that to start the game and thats what kept them (Orlando) in the game. I want to see a recommitment to the way we were defending and rebounding early in the year consistently. Were sporadic now." Orlando pulled to within one point twice in the third quarter, the last when OQuinns layup made it 59-58 with 7:17 remaining. Charlotte answered as McRoberts drained back-to-back 3-pointers and scored eight points during a 16-6 run that pushed the Bobcats lead back to double-digits at 75-64. Charlotte took an 81-74 lead into the fourth quarter. McRoberts, whose six 3-pointers were a career high, was often left unchallenged from 3-point range and took full advantage. He was 4-for-6 from behind the arc for all 12 of his first-half points as the Bobcats took a 50-41 halftime lead. Charlotte scored the games first five points and hit nine of its first 11 shots to take a 22-10 advantage on Kidd-Gilchrists dunk with 6:52 remaining. The Bobcats led by as many as 16 in the opening quarter. Orlando used 11 rebounds from Vucevic and eight points off the bench from Harris in the second quarter to get as close as 43-39 with 1:31 remaining in the second quarter. Charlotte then scored the next six points and finished the half on a 7-2 run to take a nine-point halftime lead. CLEVELAND -- Their playoff chase, which somehow lasted longer that it probably should have, is officially over. The Cavaliers came up short. On a night when they finally put it all together, their hopes crumbled. Dion Waiters scored 22 points and the Cavs played one of their best games this season, routing the Detroit Pistons 122-100 on Wednesday before being eliminated from the playoff race. Tyler Zeller scored 18 and rookie Matthew Dellavedova had 14 points and 12 assists for Cleveland, which had its slim playoff hopes ended when Atlanta defeated Boston 105-97. "Its an empty feeling now that your chances are done," said All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving, who has missed the post-season in each of his three years in the NBA. "You think about things you could have done, you should have done. Its inevitable, especially as big a competitor as I am. Its definitely going to be on my mind. "You always want to compete for something as special as the playoffs, but our chances were snapped tonight. Its disappointing." As the Hawks were rallying to take down the Celtics, the Cavs played with passion and purpose -- two things missing too often earlier this season. Spencer Hawes added 15 points for the Cavs, who led by 32 at half and rolled to one of their best all-around performances in what has been an otherwise disappointing season. Cleveland set a team record with 26 assists in the first half and finished with a season-high 41. But the Cavs will watch the playoffs, and spend the months ahead thinking about games they let slip away, losses that came back to haunt them. "We put ourselves in this hole," said coach Mike Brown, who returned for a second stint with the club after being fired in 2010. "I wish we could have a couple of those games back from early on. I cant fault anybody but ourselves." Brandon Jennings scored 17 after missing his first 10 shots for the Pistons, who played their second game in a row without forward Josh Smith, sidelined with knee tendinitis. Jonas Jerebko added 17 points for Detroit, which was coming off a surprising win in Atlanta. "They outplayed us and outworked us," Pistons interim coach John Loyer said of the Cavs. "We were embarrassed in the first half. This is an unforgiving league, and they didnt care that we beat Atlanta last night." Clevelands unexpected blowout win capped a turbulent few days. Earlier this week, Irving got into a public spat with Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon, an embarrassing squabble between two of the citys biggest sports stars. Irving had told Gordon "to mind his own business" about commenting on his supposed rift with Waiters. Following practice on Monday, Irving and Waiters presented a united front and said they worked through any differences and were only focused on winning. Maybe the backcourt mates patching up their differences rubbed off on the rest of the Cavs, as Brown spent most of the game sitting as opposed to standing and yelling. The Cavs had 14 assists on 14 field goals in the first quarter, which ended with them up 31-18. They were nearly as efficient in the second quarter, outscoring the Pistons 38-19 on the way to a 69-37 halftime lead. "This is the way we want to play most of the time," said Brown, who tied Bill Fitch for the second-most wins in franchise history. "It felt pretty good." Following the game, Atlantas game was on the locker room TV as Irving waited to speak with reporters. The season didnt go as planned, but theres nothing more he can do. "As a man and as a competitor, youve got to suck it up," he said. "This is my third year. Obviously, things didnt go in a perfect way. But theres no perfect season. For me, its just about continuing to grow and finish the season strong." NOTES: Brown and Fitch have 304 wins, 12 behind Hall of Famer Lenny Wilkens. ... Irving is "proud" of friend and former high school teammate Derrick Gordon for coming "out" as the first openly gay player in Division I. "Hes a strong person. I think the way he did it is a true test of his character and its big time," Irving said. "Im happy for him." Irving said he would not have any issue with a gay teammate. "To see guys in sports coming out now is part of life," he said. "Im not a judgmental guy, not one bit. But Im proud of Derrick and Im proud of Jason Collins. Its a big step for everybody and every generation." ... First-year official Brad Allen will join the NFL as a referee from the Atlantic Coast Conference, where he has been a referee for the past nine seasons. Allen is the first to go to the referee position in his first NFL season since Tommy Bell in 1962. Allen has refereed several major bowl games, including the 2012 Rose Bowl and 2014 Sugar Bowl. Allen replaces veteran referee Mike Carey, who will join CBS Sports as a rules analyst. Veteran NFL officials Ronald Torbert and Craig Wrolstad are new referees in 2014, replacing retired referees Scott Green and Ron Winter. Wrolstad has spent the past 11 seasons as a field judge while Torbert has worked the past four as a side judge. Among the dozen new officials are side judge Shawn Hochuli, the son of referee Ed Hochuli, and field judge Brad Freeman, the son of back judge Steve Freeman, a former player with Buffalo. Two women, line judge Sarah Thomas and head linesperson Maia Chaka,, will work minicamps and preseason games this year.dddddddddddd They are in the officiating development program and officiated in Conference USA in 2013. "Our first-year officials were all among the best in college football, including Brad Allen, one of our new referees," NFL vice-president of officiating Dean Blandino said. "Brad was an outstanding referee for many years in the ACC and we are excited about having him on the field. Ron and Craig have proven to be outstanding NFL officials and they also are ready to assume the referee position." LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Kobe Bryant wasnt anywhere in sight when the Los Angeles Lakers pulled off one of the most stunning upsets of the NBA season so far.Carlos Boozer scored 18 points in his new role off the bench, and the Lakers built a 24-point cushion against the league-leading Golden State Warriors and hung on for a 115-105 victory Tuesday night.Bryant, the NBAs No. 3 career scorer, sat out for the first time this season to rest his tired legs. The decision made by coach Byron Scott, who had been hinting at it for days.Looking at our schedule coming up, I just thought it was a good time to give him a day of rest and let him prepare for the next game, Scott said. Kobe told me last night, anyway, Coach, whatever you want me do. Just let me know. So hes on board with it.The 36-year-old Bryant is averaging 35.5 minutes through the first 27 games and shooting just 37.2 per cent.I think this is something that has to happen periodically, Scott said. Youve got to remember — this is 19 years in this league. Thats an unbelievable career. I dont care how much his mind is willing. Youre not going to be able to play 82 games at the level that he is accustomed to playing. So sometimes, you have to give him days off as well as games off.Bryant, who passed Michael Jordan on the career points list Dec. 14 at Minnesota, missed 76 games last season because of a torn Achilles and a fractured left knee. Scott said Bryant would be evaluated before Thursdays nationally televised Christmas Day game at Chicago.Wayne Ellington made his first start for the Lakers in Bryants place and scored 12 points in 25 minutes, one of seven Lakers in double figures. It was a good team win. We just had a lot of energy and it was a lot of fun from the start, said Nick Young. From the lockerroom to the court, we felt good. Some guys just played free tonight and did their thing. They had no handcuffs on them.Stephen Curry had 22 points and six assists for the Warriors, who lost for only the fourth time in 27 games. Klay Thompson had 18 points on 6 for 15 shooting.Curry was 10 for 14 from the field after averaging 30.3 points and 12.3 assists in his previous three games against the Lakers. Draymond Green made one of six shots in 24 minutes and finished with two points. The Lakers made only one field goal over the final 5:56, a clutch 3-pointer by Jeremy Lin with 35 seconds to play. The Warriors cut it to 113-105 on Justin Holidays 3-pointer with 29 seconds to go, before Ronnie Price helped put it away with a pair of free throws. They kicked our (butts). They were much better than we were, said Warriors coach Steve Kerr said. We werent ready to play. We started turning the ball over immediately. We never had any energy, which is going to happen occasionally in the NBA with 82 games. The Lakers were moving the ball just fine in the first half without Bryant orchestrating the offence. They had 19 assists and got 12 points each from Wesley Johnson and Ed Davis to take a 63-48 lead.We just decided to take it upon ourselves and play for one another without our leader, centre Jordan Hill said. We knew it was going to be a tough fight, but we came out and played hard, played together and moved the ball around.___TIP-INS:Warriors: For the first time this season, the Warriors trailed by double digits after the opening quarter. Adams, the Walter Payton Award runner-up in each of the past two seasons, is on track to graduate at the end of the spring semester. At that point, he could leave EWU, enroll elsewhere, a la the University of Oregon which is in the market for a new starting quarterback, and have immediate eligibility for his senior season. Former Gardner-Webb defensive end Shaquille Riddick, another FCS All-American, followed such a path last year when he graduated in the spring and spent his senior season on the FBS level at West Virginia University. Players in those situations view such a transfer as a way to boost their NFL Draft status by playing against a higher level of competition. Adams, who has accounted for a combined 100 passing and rushing touchdowns in 25 games over Eastern Washingtons last two seasons, did not apply for early entry into this years draft, although he would have been eligible as a fourth- year junior had he sought an NFL career. He has downplayed the talk of a transfer. If he returns to the Eagles lineup, they will be the favorite to win a fourth straight Big Sky Conference title and considered a top contender for the FCS national championship. If Adams were to play his senior season at an FBS school, the FCS would lose its most high-profile player. However, what wont change is the talent level at footballs most-important position, which is incredibly high across the division. Including Adams, this past years all-conference first-team quarterback is scheduled to return in 10 of the 13 FCS conferences. In the case of the Big Sky (Adams), Big South Conference (Coastal Carolinas Alex Ross), CAA Football (Villanovas John Robertson), Southern Conference (Chattanoogas Jacob Huesman) and Southwestern Athletic Conference (Alcorn States John Gibbs Jr.), the first-team selection also is thhe conferences reigning offensive player of the year.dddddddddddd Theres also the first-team QBs from the Ivy League (Dartmouths Dalyn Williams), Missouri Valley Football Conference (Tre Roberson of national runner-up Illinois State), Northeast Conference (Sacred Hearts RJ Noel), Ohio Valley Conference (Jacksonville States Eli Jenkins) and the Pioneer Football League (Jacksonvilles Kade Bell). Robertson not only won the 2014 Walter Payton Award as the outstanding player in the FCS - Adams was considered the front-runner in October until he missed four games with a broken foot - but the Villanova magician was the 2012 Jerry Rice Award recipient as the FCS freshman of the year. So there would be no shortage of star power without Adams. Plus, there are plenty of other elite FCS quarterbacks who will return next season, including North Dakota States Carson Wentz, the most outstanding player of the national championship game when the Bison won for the fourth straight season. In addition, dual-threat signal callers Dakota Prukop of Montana State and Vad Lee of James Madison warrant consideration for the Payton Award even though they are in the same conferences as Adams and Robertson - the Big Sky and CAA, respectively. Other returning standouts include Cal Polys Chris Brown, Murray States KD Humphries, Sam Houston States Jared Johnson, Western Carolinas Troy Mitchell, Yales Morgan Roberts, Eastern Illinois Jalen Whitlow, Grambling States Johnathan Williams and Libertys Josh Woodrum. Johnson, who helped lead Sam Houston to the national semifinals, makes up for QB losses in the Southland Conference, which is the only one in the FCS not to return either its all-conference first- and second-team selections, if not both. The second-team QBs are back in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference with North Carolina Centrals Malcolm Bell and the Patriot League with Holy Cross Peter Pujals. Theres no doubt the FCS quarterback class will run deep next season. SACRAMENTO, Calif. - DeMarcus Cousins has the statistics. He has the stature. And he has the support of several high-profile peers calling for him to get his first All-Star nod. What he doesnt have is a winning team.Just about everybody around the NBA agrees that the Sacramento Kings franchise centre has blossomed into one of the leagues best big men. Based on ballot returns the past few years, though, many still dont believe hes done enough with the Kings to earn All-Star status in the deep Western Conference.Fans left Cousins out of the mix again when the starters were announced last week. The reserves, voted on by the coaches, will be revealed Thursday night, and NBA Commissioner Adam Silver will select any injury replacements before the marquee game at New Yorks Madison Square Garden on Feb. 15.Count Cousins among those wondering if he finally has the right resume — and reputation — in his fifth season to trump Sacramentos shortcomings. To be totally honest, it is what it is, Cousins said. If I make it, I make it. If I dont, I dont.Coaches must vote for three frontcourt players, two guards and two wild cards. Cousins main competition in the frontcourt is Portlands LaMarcus Aldridge, Oklahoma Citys Kevin Durant, San Antonios Tim Duncan, Dallas Dirk Nowitzki and Houstons Dwight Howard. The biggest thing hurting Cousins campaign — besides the competition — is his teams worsening record. After starting 9-5 this season, the Kings (16-27) have collapsed since Cousins came down with viral meningitis in late November. They went 2-8 during his sick leave — which coincided with Michael Malones stunning firing as coach — and have failed to pick up the pieces under short-term replacement Tyrone Corbin.Coaches are not allowed to vote for their own players, but Corbin believes Cousins shouldnt be penalized because of all the chaos around him.Its the All-Star game. Its about individual performances, Corbin said. You look at (team records) sometimes, but I think most cases on the All-Star performance they look at the guy and his numbers and what hes doing for this year. Hes certainly having a great year where we havent won the number of games that we would like to win.Cousins began to repair his volatile image when he helped Team USA win gold at the FIBA World Cup in Spain over the summer, and his game has continued to rise during another disappointing season in Californias capital city.He entered Wednesday averaging career highs of 24.2 points, 12.6 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 1.6 blocks per game, staggering statistics by most traditional metrics. He was also eighth in the NBA in player efficiency rating at 25.78.Perhaps most importantly, his emotional and often unpredictable behaviour has improved — at least by his standards. After compiling a league-most 33 technical fouls the last two years, Cousins has just four this season. You can tell theres been a lot of growing on his side as a player, Bulls centre Joakim Noah said. He is playing more efficiently. I feel sometimes he gets frustrated and that works in our favour. I feel this year hes the one getting guys frustrated and its worked for them.Clippers coach Doc Rivers said hes noticed a difference, too.Hes grown up emotionally, Rivers said. His game has grown up. I think hes the best low-post player in the league, and hes doing it every night. Hes doing more than just scoring. Hes doing everything. Im just very proud of him.Rivers later said Cousins is an All-Star in his mind, and so have most coaches this season. Of course, many have said such things publicly in the past. How they vote will be the true test of their resolve.Golden States Steve Kerr, who is coaching the Western Conference in the All-Star game, said most coaches will side with the player on the better team when making a close call. The same reasoning is why Kerr is confident Klay Thompson will join Stephen Curry on the West team and represent the NBA-leading Warriors (36-7).Asked specifically about Cousins, Kerr said hes one of the few players in the league that his staff centres its game plan around. But he stopped short of saying whether hed select Cousins on the crowded ballot. There is no doubt that he is an All-Star-calibre player, but its musical chairs in the West, Kerr said. Chris Jones followed Roziers lead by sinking a few more from long range while contributing to the kind of defensive performance coach Rick Pitino wanted. Nothing like a shakeup to make things happen. Jones came off the bench to score 18 points, including four 3-pointers, and the No. 9 Cardinals bounced back from their first loss to roll past Southern Mississippi 69-38 Friday night. Five days after a lacklustre effort in a 93-84 loss to North Carolina, the Cardinals (6-1) were better on both ends with the help of two new starters. Freshman guard Rozier got things going offensively by making his first three from beyond the arc en route to nine points, while 6-foot-10 redshirt freshman centre Mangok Mathiang had seven rebounds and three blocks. "For a freshman to get a start, it builds my confidence up," said Rozier, who added three assists in 19 minutes. Added Jones, "Im happy for him. He deserved it." Jones made 4 of 7 from long range and 5 of 10 overall. Louisville shot 23 of 55 (42 per cent) and matched a season high with 12 3-pointers on 31 attempts. The Cardinals trademark pressure defence forced 22 turnovers and stifled the Golden Eagles (6-1) at the start of both halves, holding them scoreless for more than 12 combined minutes. USMs total points set a season low for a Louisville opponent. "That was a tail whipping," USM coach Donnie Tyndall said. "Their team was obviously better coached and more prepared than our team. I say that sincerely and I mean it." Louisville senior guard Russ Smith scored his 11 points in the second half. Forward Montrezl Harrell also scored 11 with nine rebounds. Louisville outrebounded Southern Mississippi 38-33, scored 21 points off turnovers and made 16 assists. Michael Craigs nine points led the Golden Eagles, who shot 13 of 45 from the field (29 per cent). The Cardinals had nowhere to go but up after losing to the Tar Heels in a game marked by bad shots against the zone and frequent defensiive breakdowns.dddddddddddd. A hard week of practice followed and Pitino changed his starting lineup, inserting Rozier into Jones starting spot with Mathiang supplanting Stephan Van Treese in the middle. "I dont really dont care who starts but I was doing it because I wanted to get Terry some confidence," Pitino said. "He wasnt playing the way the Terry Rozier Ive seen in practice. I just wanted to get him some early minutes and getting him feeling good about himself. It was nothing anybody did wrong." It took just 21 seconds for the moves to start paying off as Rozier buried the first of back-to-back 3-pointers followed by Mathiangs jumper off the glass as Louisville scored the first 13 points over 5:02. Though 5-of-9 shooting helped, improved ball movement against the Golden Eagles zone set up those chances as the patient Cardinals worked it around, inside and out in recording 12 assists, more than they had in both of the past two games. Though the Cardinals good shooting cooled off to 12 of 29 (41 per cent) by halftime as Louisville attempted 17 from beyond the arc, the opportunities were there and Jones came off the bench to sink of 2 of 3. Left out of the early fun were Smith -- who had 36 points in Sundays loss -- and Hancock, whose combined 0-for-8 start from long range left them scoreless at the break. Hancock finished with five points while Smith hit 5 of 8 from the field. "It was one of those games where the defence decides whether or not Im going to score," Smith said. "They didnt want me to score and I wasnt going to take any bad shots." More impressive was Louisvilles defensive energy that Pitino compared to last years championship team. The Cardinals held Southern Mississippi scoreless for the first 5:30 of the game and the initial 6:54 of the second half, paving the way for the kind of performance Pitino hopes will become a habit. "We want to play how we did last season," the coach said. "Last year we played about 70 per cent man(-to-man), and that is what we did tonight. It confuses people and gets them out of rhythm. "I want to continue that." CHARLOTTE - With his role on a new team in flux, Raptors back-up point guard D.J. Augustin is in the middle of a nostalgic week. Just four games into his Raptors career, Augustin returned to Charlotte - a city in which he played and lived for four years - on Wednesday and will make his first return to Indiana two days later. "Its different," Augustin said of his emotions, sitting in the visitors locker room at Charlottes Time Warner Cable Arena moments before Wednesday nights game. "Its a different feeling being on this side of the locker room but thats how life is, you have different experiences, you change, [experience] different changes in your career and thats where Im at now." "[Its] familiar territory. I lived [in Charlotte] for four years. The team drafted me, gave me a chance in the NBA so its real special, always to come back is a great feeling." The sixth year guard signed a one-year deal with Toronto during the summer after spending last season with the Pacers and the four prior as a Bobcat. Charlotte and Indiana are the only NBA homes Augustin had ever known. Coming off his worst statistical season with the Pacers, Augustin is still trying to find a comfort level in his new home. The back-up point guard has already experienced ups and downs in his short time with the Raptors. After a disappointing preseason, the veteran was given first crack at the gig, spelling Kyle Lowry off the bench, based on his experience over rookie Dwight Buycks and the recently signed Julyan Stone. Averaging 2.8 points and 1.4 assists, playing just under 12 minutes as reserve in Torontos first five games, Augustin has shown glimpses of the player he once was in Charlotte. Most concerning, he has been inconsistent, occasionally erratic at the point of attack and has struggled with his jump shot - one of his strengths as a player - shooting just 24 per cent from the field and missing all seven of his three-point attempts. "[Im] still trying to get comfortable," Augustin admitted. "Weve got a lot of games to go. [Im] still trying to get comfortable [and] get in a rhythm but once it comes I think well all be clicking." "Hes just finding his rhythm," Dwane Casey echoed. "I think hes trying to be a good teammate now, trying to find his teammates and move the ball. I think that may be taking away from his shooting a bit." "Hes done a solid job," his new coach continued. "You always want more but hes done a solid job for what we need." In the first of his two homecomings, Augustin played just six first half minutes against the Bobcats Wednesday, missing his only field goal but connecting on his three free throw attempts. Searching for answers at the position, Casey opted to go with Stone off the bench in the second half as Augustin watched his new team drop a disappointing and controversial game to his old one. Drafted ninth overall by Charlotte in 2008, Augustin experienced his greatest personal success on mostly terrible Bobcats teams during his four-year tenure. With the Bobcats, Augustin averaged 10.9 points and 4.4 assists, shooting 37 per cent from long range and starting in 142 of 282 games. He is still trying to get back to that level. "This is my sixth year in the NBA, I know its a long season," he acknowledged. "Youve got to take care of your body and do the little things to help you play better on the court." On Friday he will make his first return to Indiana to face the undefeated Pacers, where both he and his team have something to prove. Kalen Ballage Dolphins Jersey . The touchline confrontation unfolded in the 72nd minute when Hull midfielder David Meyler barged into Pardew as he looked to retrieve the ball for a throw-in at KC Stadium. After squaring up to Meyler before moving his head in the direction of the players face, Pardew was sent to the stands. FA chairman Greg Dyke described Pardews actions as "serious" after Newcastles 4-1 win, and said an investigation would be opened. Pardews employers reacted quickly, holding urgent talks with the manager and announcing his punishment hours later. "His behaviour was unacceptable and is not the behaviour we expect from the manager of Newcastle United," the northeast club said on its website. Pardew, whose job does not appear to be under immediate threat, accepted the formal warning and fine, Newcastle said. "Alan unreservedly apologized immediately following the game to the player, to Hull City Football Club and its fans, and to the fans of Newcastle United," the club statement said. "We have held discussions this evening with Alan, who has offeered his sincere apologies to the club and it is clear he deeply regrets his actions.ddddddddddddquot; Although Pardew denied head-butting Meyler, he conceded the incident was "a wake-up call," coming after a recent touchline altercation with Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini. "(Meyler) was right on top of me and I wanted to just ease him away from me but obviously I put my head in a forward motion," Pardew said after the game. "I want to apologize to him, everyone at Hull and obviously my own fans as well. I dont think it was a head-butt. It wasnt a motion that was quick. "Sometimes when youre on the sideline like that you can get involved in a moment like that. It was an incident that just flared up all around me. I just wanted to get him away." Pardew said he would "accept whatever comes my way" as a punishment, and he was likely to be prevented from sitting on the bench for several games by the FA. Newcastles statement expressed disappointment that Pardews behaviour took the focus off such a fine attacking performance against Hull. Newcastle was already leading 3-1 at the time of the incident after Moussa Sissoko scored twice on either side of Loic Remys goal. (SportsNetwork.com) - The New York Rangers have struggled to pick up wins over the St. Louis Blues in recent seasons. Playing without their captain on Monday night wont help either. The Rangers bring a banged-up defensive unit into this meeting with the red- hot St. Louis Blues at Madison Square Garden. The Blueshirts have gone 4-1-1 over their past six games and play the third contest of a four-game homestand tonight. Theyll do so without captain Ryan McDonagh and fellow defenseman Kevin Klein, further depleting the clubs blue line. McDonagh suffered a separated left shoulder in Saturdays 1-0 shootout loss to the Winnipeg Jets and is expected to miss 3-to-4 weeks. Klein also exited in the first period on Saturday with a bruised foot and will sit out tonight. New York already is missing free agent signee Dan Boyle due to a broken hand, while defenseman John Moore on Saturday served the first contest of his five- game ban for an illegal check last Monday versus Minnesota. Thanks to 25 saves by Henrik Lundqvist and lengthy gutsy efforts by defenseman Dan Girardi and Marc Staal, the Rangers kept the Jets off the board until the shootout. Lundqvist, though, was beaten by Evander Kane and Blake Wheeler in the tiebreaker, while Mats Zuccarello scored for the Rangers before Rick Nash, Dominic Moore and Martin St. Louis were all denied by Winnipeg goaltender Ondrej Pavelec. We played a real strong game, Rangers coach Alain Vigneault said. (The loss) wasnt for lack of effort or execution. We played one of our best games of the year. Girardi logged 34 minutes and 50 seconds of ice time, while Staal was credited with 29:33 of work. The duo could be called again heavily tonight as the Rangers try to beat the Blues for just the third time in the past 10 meetings. They snapped a three- game series losing streak with a 3-2 win in St. Louis on Oct. 9, but have still lost three in a row and seven of eight at MSG in this series. Rick Nash scored twice and assisted on Chris Kreiders third-period tally when the clubs opened the season against each other, while Lundqvist had 23 saves. The Blues got 22 stops by Brian Elliott and goals from Jaden Schwartz and Vladimir Tarasenko. Tarasenko has six goals on the season, with five coming in the past three games. He had a hat trick in a win over Dallas on Oct. 28, then scored twice in Saturdays 3-2 shootout win over the Colorado Avalanche that stretched St. Louis winning streak to four straight. Elliott made 27 saves, stopping Gabriel Landeskog, Matt Duchene and Ryan OReilly in the shootout, while Joakim Lindstroms goal in the second round of the tiebreaker was the winner. Lindstrom took a shot from the slot that beat Colorados Semyon Varlamov through the five hole. Ive been practicing quite a bit, Lindstrom said of being in the shootout. I was comfortable being in that position. The Blues were without T.J. Oshie (concussion) and former Avalanche center Paul Stastny (shoulder), but captain David Backes made a quick return after missing one game with a concussion. Giants co-owner John Mara announced his mothers death on Super Bowl Sunday. Ann Mara slipped in front of her home in Rye, New York, during an ice storm two weeks ago and was hospitalized with a head injury the following day. While there were initial hopes for recovery, John Mara said, complications developed and she died early Sunday surrounded by her family. Ann Mara and her children owned 50 per cent of the Giants, one of the founding families of the league, since the death of her husband, Hall of Famer Wellington Mara, in 2005. While she was not active in daily operations, her opinion was valued greatly. Mrs. Mara was a tower of strength, dignity and inspiration for her family and all of us in the NFL, Commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement. Her family and the Giants organization have always reflected Mrs. Maras competitive spirit, integrity, and wonderful sense of humour. Our thoughts and prayers are with John Mara and the entire Mara family. Ann Mara was a prominent philanthropist who supported educational organizations. Mara also helped children with cancer through the Ronald McDonald House of New York. In November, she dedicated the opening of a new building for the San Miguel Academy for children at risk, which was built through the NFL Snowflake Foundation. Three days before MetLife Stadium — the home of the Giants and Jets — was the site of the Super Bowl last year, Ann Mara received the Paul J. Tagliabue Award of Excellence. It is presented to a league or team executive who demonstrates the integrity and leadership that he exhibited in career development opportunities for minority candidates and advocacy for diversity on the league and club level when he was NFL commissioner. She has been the leader of our family in every way, and we will miss her dearly, John Mara said. Married to Wellington Mara in 1954 after a chance meeting in a Roman Cattholic church, Ann Mara attended almost every Giants home and away game.dddddddddddd She was a fierce defender of the team. After the Giants beat the San Francisco 49ers in the 2011 NFC Championship game en route to their fourth Super Bowl title, she approached Fox broadcaster and Hall of Fame quarterback Terry Bradshaw, poking his arm to get his attention. You never pick the Giants, Ann Mara said. Bradshaw turned toward the camera and said, I know. I know. Im sorry. Im getting hammered for not picking the Giants. Ann Mara, sometimes referred to as The First Lady of Football, also let her sons know how she felt. Three of them work in the Giants front office. Along with John, Chris is the senior vice-president of player evaluation and Frank is the vice-president of community relations. She used to like to remind John Mara that youre an employee. When the Giants missed the playoffs for the third consecutive year this past season, John Mara, who serves as president and chief executive, was asked how his mother felt. She is not very happy with me right now, believe me, John Mara said. She suffers through this probably even more so than I do. I am on notice as well. Current and former Giants players reacted to the death on social media. Rest in Peace Mrs. Mara. My prayers also for The Mara family. What a great woman!!!! wrote current Oakland Raiders defensive end Justin Tuck, a member of the 2008 and 2012 Giants Super Bowl champions. Giants safety Antrel Rolle called Ann Mara an angel and a blessing in his five years with the team. I absolutely love this woman! She had a smile that would brighten anyones day. She was our fighter & backbone, Rolle tweeted. Born Ann Mumm in New York City on June 18, 1929, Mara is survived by 11 children, 43 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. One of her grandchildren, Chris daughter Rooney Mara, was nominated for an Oscar for best actress for The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo in 2012. Funeral plans are pending. SEATTLE -- Lloyd McClendon is bringing an entirely new coaching staff to Seattle, although a number of his additions have ties to the Mariners organization. McClendon announced his coaching staff on Monday, with only two of his hires coming from outside of the club. Instead, McClendon is promoting a number of coaches from the minors and still holding out the possibility that one coach may return from the previous staff under Eric Wedge but in a different role. "Obviously, there is some advantage to having some guys from within the organization," McClendon said. "If you have the opportunity to promote from within, No. 1 its healthy for the organization, and No. 2 if those guys are qualified individuals it becomes an A-plus. ... All those guys fit that bill." Howard Johnson, the former New York Mets third baseman, will take over as Seattles hitting coach after serving in that role for the organization at Triple-A Tacoma last season. Hell replace Dave Hansen who was with the club for only one season but may return as Johnsons assistant. Seattle general manager Jack Zduriencik said Hansen has an offer to return as the clubs assistant hitting coach if he does not find another major league job. Rick Waits will move from minor league pitching co-ordinator to Seattles pitching coach, while John Stearns will be the third-base coach and Chris Woodward will be the infield coach. Stearns finished the 2013 season as Tacomas manager after Daren Brown was added to the major league staff, while Woodward was a roving minor-league infield co-ordinator. McClendon said he was impressed by Waits and his view of how a pitching staff should be handled. "He really blew me away from the interview process," McClendon said. "(He) represented everything I wanted in a pitching coach." McClendon is bringing in Andy Van Slyke (first-base coach) and Mike Rojas (bullpen coach) from outside the organization. Van Slyke has been out of coaching since 2009 when he left the staff in Detroit, where he worked with McClendon. He reached out to McClendon to express his interest in returning to coaching in Seattle. "He was excited for the opportunity to coach with me again," McClendon said. "Andy Is probably the most impressive practice coach I have ever been around." McClendon previously announced that Trent Jewett will serve as his bench coach. The team said that bullpen catcher Jason Phillips and Scott Budner (left-handed batting practice pitcher) would return, and Zduriencik said if Brown does not find another major league job he has already signed a contract for a minor league position in the Mariners organization. WASHINGTON -- General manager George McPhee and coach Adam Oates lost their jobs with the Washington Capitals on Saturday, about two weeks after the team failed to make the playoffs for the first time since 2007. "We were left with the overall impression that the team wasnt trending toward being able to compete for a Stanley Cup," Capitals owner Ted Leonsis said in a news conference at the clubs arena. "And that was just a clear signal and why it was time to make those changes." McPhees contract was up and the team announced it will not give him a new one after his 17 years as the GM, which included drafting Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom in the first round. Oates was fired with one season left on his three-year deal. A former star player for the Capitals, he was in his first job as an NHL head coach. Washington finished this season with the ninth-most points in the Eastern Conference, one spot out of a playoff berth. "You have to do something to pivot the team to be an ongoing strong team," Leonsis said. "And I just felt that new leadership at this time was needed, and lets start it with a clean slate." Asked whether any player would be untouchable as part of upcoming changes -- a chance, perhaps, for Leonsis to mention captain and top scorer Ovechkin -- the owner replied: "Im not the general manager. So If the general manager comes with something, we would listen to the general manager." Ovechkin has won three league MVP awards and again led the NHL in scoring this season with 51 goals, but the Capitals havent made it past the second round of the playoffs during the Russian wings career. Dick Patrick, the president of the Capitals, said the team already has drawn up a list of potential GM candidates. "Typically, youd like to have a general manager in place and have him choose a coach," Patrick said. The Capitals reached the Stanley Cup finals in 1998, McPhees first year on the job, and were swept by the Detroit Red Wings. Later, McPhee oversaw a "rebuild" ordered by Leonsis, including jettisoning top players with big contracts such as Jaromir Jagr. "Lets not forget that rebuilding process was dramatic. And I watched a great executive go through really, really hard times and really rebuild that team quickly. We just didnt get there," Leonsis said. "At some point, you just have to try something different." While McPhee eventually built a young roster filled with offensive stars, he never placed as much emphasis on constructing a rugged, defensive-minded blue line crop. He hired a succession of coaches with zero previous NHL experience running a team, including Glen Hanlon, Bruce Boudreau, Dale Hunter and Oates. Led by Ovechkin, the Capitals produced terrific regular-season results for a half-dozen seasons, without similar success in the post-season. Four years ago, Washington won the Presidents Trophy for having the most points during the season, then lost in the first round of the playoffs to the eighth-seeded Montreal Canadiens. Leonsis called McPhee, who built seven division-winning teams, "a talented man, a great friend," but that it was time for "a fresh set of eyes." The Capitals went 65-48-17 under Oates in his two seasons. In a brief statement released via the team, Oates called it "a tremendous honour to coach the Capitals these past two seasons" and said he was "grateful for the opportunity." In his first season in charge, which was shortened because of a labour dispute, Washington reached the playoffs with a late surge before losing in the first round to the New York Rangers in seven games. "We were a continuously improving playoff team until we werent. And the last two seasons showed us that we need to improve. And thats what it came down to," Leonsis said. "Dick and I said, We have to make that gut check. Do we have to change? And where do you start? And you start with the coach and the general manager." HOUSTON -- New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi admitted he didnt know anything about Yangervis Solarte when he was signed to a minor league deal in January. The rookie is quickly teaching his manager all about himself. Solarte had three hits and an RBI in his first major league start and Derek Jeter drove in a run to give the New York Yankees their first win this season, 4-2 over the Houston Astros on Thursday night. "You have to give a lot of credit to our scouting department and front office for finding this kid because he gives us a lot of options being a switch-hitter and can play all over the infield," Girardi said. The 26-year-old Solarte has spent time in the minors with Minnesota and Texas, but never got called up until this season after hitting .429 this spring. "Ive worked very hard for this, and to be able to help the team, thats even better," Solarte said in Spanish through a translator. "These are the small things that are key." Solarte singled in a two-run third inning which put New York up 2-1. He doubled in the fifth and scored on a single by Jeter to push it to 3-1. Houston cut the lead to one in the bottom of that inning before Solarte came through again, this time with a single that drove in Ichiro Suzuki. Solarte, the third baseman, also had a nifty defensive play when he grabbed a bullet hit right at him by Jose Altuve in the eighth. Ivan Nova allowed six hits, two runs and walked five in 5 2-3 innings. He was helped by a defence which turned four double plays with him on the mound. "This could have been a game where he gave up a lot of runs without those double play balls," Girardi said. "He made big pitches when he had to." David Robertson, who took over as closer for Mariano Rivera, pitched a perfect ninth for his first save. Dexter Fowler continued to shine in his first season with the Astros, getting two singles to become the second player in franchise history -- and first since Ken Caminiti in 1987 -- to begin his Houston career with three straight multi-hit games. "We had our chances, especially early on there," Houston manager Bo Porter said. "I think we hit into four double plays in the first five innings. We had baserunners everywhere. It was probably one big hit away from getting some separation early in the gaame.dddddddddddd" Houston starter Brett Oberholtzer also went 5 2-3 innings, allowing five hits and three runs while fanning five. Suzuki doubled with two outs in the seventh before scoring on the RBI by Solarte. Solartes hit was a high pop-up which dropped right between three Astros players assembled directly in front of home plate. Solarte doubled with one out in the fifth and scored on a two-out single by Jeter to make it 3-1. Jeter was thrown out trying to stretch the hit into a double. Houston got to 3-2 when Jonathan Villar doubled and scored on a single by Fowler in the bottom of the inning. The fourth double play by the Yankees got the first two outs before Chris Carter grounded out to end the inning. Oberholtzer retired the first seven batters he faced before running into trouble. Suzuki and Solarte hit consecutive singles before a third one by Brett Gardner scored Suzuki to tie it at 1-all. Jeter walked and Carlos Beltrans sacrifice fly scored Solarte to give New York a 2-1 lead. Fowler and Grossman hit back-to-back singles to start the first before Nova plunked Castro to load the bases. Altuve grounded into a forceout that left Castro out at second and scored Fowler to make it 1-0. Carter walked to load the bases again, but the Yankees turned a double play to limit the damage. The Yankees also used double plays to get out of the third and fourth innings. Castro was also hit by a pitch in the third inning to become the first Astro since Brad Ausmus on April 7, 2007, to be hit twice in a game. He remained in the game before being replaced by Carlos Corporan in the top of the sixth with a bruise on his right foot. X-rays were negative and he is day to day. NEW ORLEANS -- The New Orleans Pelicans say centre Jason Smith is out indefinitely with a right knee injury. The club says an MRI has revealed cartilage damage in the knee. The 7-foot Smith has played in 31 games and has started 27 times. Hes averaging 9.7 points, 5.8 rebounds and 1 block in 26.8 minutes per game. The injury is only the latest setback for the Pelicans, whod lost seven straight entering Saturday nights home game against Golden State. MIAMI -- New Miami Dolphins offensive co-ordinator Bill Lazor says he can help head coach Joe Philbin win games and some job security. Lazor said he accepted the job Wednesday because of Philbin, even though his new boss status is shaky after two so-so seasons. "Right now my future and his future are together," Lazor said. "Im in it with him. I choose to compete and make an impact and to be a difference-maker, and thats why Im here." Lazor was hired Wednesday by Philbin after one season as quarterbacks coach with the Philadelphia Eagles, where he helped develop second-year pro Nick Foles into the NFLs top-rated passer. The Dolphins also had a second-year quarterback in Ryan Tannehill. Foles threw 27 touchdown passes and two interceptions, while Tannehill threw 24 and 17. Lazor said he studied Tannehill on video before accepting the job. "Im really excited to work with him," Lazor said. "I see a lot of ability." The Dolphins ranked 27th in the NFL in yards, finished 8-8 and missed the playoffs for the fifth consecutive year. The Eagles ranked second in total yards and offensive points, went 10-6 and won the NFC East. "A lot of the things that led to that are going to have a great impact in what I believe works going forward," Lazor said. Lazor was offensive co-ordinator at the University of Virginia from 2010 to 2012, and he has also worked for the Washington Redskins, Seattle Seahawks and Atlanta Falcons. He replaces Mike Sherman, who was fired last week after two seasons with Miami and was Tannehills head coach at Texas A&M. The Dolphins are also searching for a general manager to replace Jeff Ireland, who departed last week after six seasons. On Wednesday they announced the completion of an interview with Brian Xanders, senior personnel executive with the Detroit Lions. Five candidates interviewed earlier. Considered along with Lazor for the offensive co-ordinator job were Greeen Bay Packers quarterbacks coach Ben McAdoo, who was hired Tuesday as offensive co-ordinator of the New York Giants, and former Washington Redskins offensive co-ordinator Kyle Shanahan.dddddddddddd Lazor said he and Philbin hit it off during the interview process. They had known each other casually for years. "Bill is an accomplished coach and will be a great addition to our coaching staff," Philbin said in a statement. "Bill has been instrumental in helping players reach their full potential, as players and people, at both the college and professional level. He also has a proven track record of success working with a wide variety of offences." In addition to the Eagles Chip Kelly, Lazor has coached under Dan Reeves, Joe Gibbs and Mike Holmgren. "The No. 1 thing that was common was that they had a vision of how offensive football should look," Lazor said. "Every day we went out to practice, they made sure what they saw on the field was heading toward that vision. Its the job of the coaches to keep pushing in that direction." Lazor was noncommittal regarding other possible changes in Philbins offensive staff. "He and I have not had all of our conversations about the structure of the staff," Lazor said. "Thats something that will be handled going forward." Some sort of shakeup was inevitable after the Dolphins scored once in their final 24 possessions while losing their final two games to blow a potential playoff berth. Miami allowed a franchise-record 58 sacks, and off-season upgrades will focus on an offensive line depleted by the teams midseason bullying scandal. The Dolphins might be in the market for a running back, too. Lamar Miller scored two touchdowns, the lowest total for a player leading the Dolphins in rushing since 1980. Miami threw the ball 65 per cent of the time, third-highest in the NFL. The Eagles threw it 53 per cent of the time, sixth-lowest. PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Mike Munchak is going back to his roots, and heading closer to home in the process. A person familiar with the decision said Wednesday night the former Tennessee Titans head coach will join the Pittsburgh Steelers as offensive line coach. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the deal was not yet official. The hiring was first reported by the Houston Chronicle. Munchak was fired by the Titans on Jan. 4 after leading Tennessee to a 22-26 record in three seasons. The 53-year-old had a year left on his contract, but was let go after 31 seasons as a player or coach with the club due to differences with upper management about the direction of the franchise. He interviewed with the Steelers recently to replace Jack Bicknell Jr., who was fired earlier this month. Munchak also spoke to Cleveland and Detroit about their head coaching vacancies as well as Penn State, where he played under Joe Paterno from 1978-81. Munchak grew up in Scranton, Pa., rooting for the "Super Steelers" of the 1970s. Now the Hall of Fame guard finds himself in charge of a unit that has struggled to stay healthy or play with any consistency in recent years. The Steelers went 8-8 in 2013, rallying from a 2-6 start to avoid the franchises first losing record in a decade. Pittsburgh did it despite losing star centre Maurkice Pouncey eight plays into the season — against the Titans — for the season with a major knee injury. It kick-started a fitful fall that saw the Steelers use four centres and forced Bicknell to play mix-and-match with the other line positions depending on who was healthy. The constant shuffling, combined with significant step backs in play by second-year left tackle Mike Adams and third-year right tackle Marcus Gilbert, stunted the growth of Pittsburghs offence. The Steelers ranked 27th in the league in yards rushing (1,383) and 29th in yards per attempt (3.5). While running back LeVeon Bell set a team record for yards from scrimmage by a rookie, he averaged just 3.5 yards per carry and spent most of his time mincing his steps at the line of scrimmage waiting for holes that sometimes failed to open. The line struggled to protect quarterback Ben Roethlisberger early in the season, giving up 36 sacks through the first nine games. Those numbers dipped significantly later in the season, a combination of improved play and Pittsburghs move to a no-huddle offence. Munchak, who made nine Pro Bowls during his 12-year career with the Houston Oilers from 1982-93, was considered one of the best line coaches in the NFL before ascending to head coach in 2011. MIAMI - Tennessee Titans defensive end Adewale Ojomo has been arrested in a prostitution sting. A Miami police report stated the 25-year-old South Florida native was booked into jail Friday morning on a charge of soliciting a prostitute. He was being held on $500 bail. According to the arrest report, an undercover detective was working in an area known for prostitution Thursday night when Ojomo pulled up in a white 2013 Lexus. After a brief conversation, police say Ojomo offered the undercover detective $100 for sex. The report says Ojomo was planning to go to a nearby store for condoms, but he was arrested before he could drive away. He signed with Tennessee last year. The Titans say theyre aware of the arrest but had no other comment. Ojomo signed with the New York Giants as an undrafted free agent in 2012. ARLINGTON, Texas -- Mitch Moreland tried to play through pain in his left ankle because Prince Fielder and about a dozen other Texas teammates had been sidelined by a dizzying array of injuries. Fielders replacement at first base just couldnt do it anymore. Moreland will miss about three months for surgery on an ankle thats been bothering him all season. The timing could mean that hes finished for the year, just as Fielder is after neck surgery late last month. "I felt like I was obligated to the team to go out there and give it what I had," Moreland said Sunday. "I felt like I did that for the most part until it came to a point where I cant do it." The 28-year-old Moreland had two injections to ease the pain, and he said the most recent shot lasted about five days. He finally went to manager Ron Washington to say the pain was just too strong. "Its to the point where Im hurting the team, hurting myself trying to go out there and make something happen," said Moreland, who knew surgery was coming but wanted to wait until the off-season. "Its hurting pretty bad." The Rangers, who didnt plan an immediate roster move Sunday, lead the majors in both disabled list uses with 18 and current players on the DL at 12. Moreland will become the 13th once they decide what to do about first base. Utilityman Donnie Murphy started Sunday against Cleveland. "Its hard to put your finger on it," general manager Jon Daniels said. "Its been a little bit everything -- ankles, backs, necks, elbows, legs, shin bones. We havent been able to connect the dots." Fielder, acquired in an off-season trade that sent popular second baseman Ian Kinsler to Detroit, was supposed to restore some power to an offence that dipped significantly in 2013. But Fielder hit just three home runs in 150 at-bats before acknowledging that he was dealing with neck pain that even went back to last season. He had surgery to fuse two disks in his neck. Moreland had a career-high 23 homers last year while hitting just .232. But he has gone deep just twice in 167 at-bats this year and is hitting .246. "Hes done everything he could have done," Daniels said. "Hes fought through it, but its become apparent its limiting him." Catcher Chris Gimenez, who has given the Rangers a surprising boost with his bat, has limited experience at first base in the majors and could be an option when the Rangers make a move, likely later Sunday or Monday. Another possibility is Jim Adduci, who played first early in the season but has been out since April with a broken finger on his left hand. He was close to returning when he injured the same finger during a minor league rehab assignment Saturday. "Were just going to have to go with what weve got," Washington said. "Im just trying to make the guys I do have believe they can and just go to war. Thats it." MONTREAL -- The wild fans, the history and the weight of expectations make the Montreal Canadiens a demanding team for any hockey coach, especially those with no NHL experience. But three who were in that position in the late 1990s and early 2000s -- Alain Vigneault, Michel Therrien and Claude Julien -- have gone on to do some impressive things in the NHL. A victory in the Eastern Conference final between Vigneaults New York Rangers and Therrien, in his second stint with Montreal, will put one of them in a Stanley Cup final. Between the three men, they will have been to the final five times. In 2008, Therrien reached the final with the Pittsburgh Penguins, losing in six games to the Detroit Red Wings. In 2011, Juliens Boston Bruins defeated Vigneaults Vancouver Canucks to claim the Stanley Cup. And in 2013, Julien had the Bruins back in the final only to lose to the Chicago Blackhawks. All three have credited the chance they got to coach middling-to-weak Montreal teams with their later success, even if their head coaching prospects were in doubt when they were eventually let go by the Canadiens. "You never know about the future," said the 50-year-old Therrien, whose team is coming off a second-round win over Juliens Bruins. "We learned a lot when we were young and that goes with experience. "Having to deal a lot with you (reporters) is a big part of our job. But it goes through a process. It goes with experience. Myself, Alain, Claude, we were young coaches at the time and we learned a lot. We started in Montreal and, Alain and me, we almost took the same route. We went back to the minors and went back to junior and the American League. "So Im glad for the success (Vigneault) had in Vancouver and New York. That was a great learning experience as a young coach to start in Montreal." There were actually four inexperienced coaches in a row, as Mario Tremblay got it started when he replaced Jacques Demers in 1995. But while Tremblay later worked as an assistant, he never got another head coaching job. In 1997, Tremblay was replaced by Vigneault, a former Ottawa Senators assistant who had been coaching in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. Vigneault was replaced midway through the 2000-01 campaign by Therrien, who in turn lost his job to Julien in 2003. Vigneault was out of coaching for two seasons but returned with the junior P.E.I. Rocket before being named head coach of the Manitoba Moose, the Canucks AHL affiliate at the time. He was promoted to the Vancouver job to start the 2006-07 season and promptly took the Canucks to a division title and got the Jack Adams Trophy as NHL coach of the year, beating out Therrien and Buffalos Lindy Ruff. The Quebec City natives Canucks finished first overall in the NHL twice. But a drop-off last season saw Vancouver opt for former Rangers coach John Tortorella while Vigneault signed a five-year deal with New York. Now Vigneaults looking for another trip to the final. "My first NHL gig as a head coach was in a beautiful place, a Canadian city where hockey is passionate, hockey is demanding," the 53-year-old said. "Expectations were always very high, so I learned a lot. "I worked with some great people. It took me six years to get another kick at the can and obviously when I got my other chance, I used my experience in Montreal and my experience of going back to junior and also going to the American League and tried to help my new NHL team the best way I could. Now, this year, the Rangers have given me another opportunity and thats what Im trying to do." When Therrien left Montreal, he got a job coaching the Penguins farm club in Wilkes-Barre and was promoted to the NHL club on Dec. 15, 2005. He was fired suddenly on Feb. 15, 2009, one season after going to the final, in favour of Dan Bylsma. The new coach got Pittsburgh back to the final and avenged the defeat of Therriens team the year before by beating the Red Wings for the Cup. Therrien worked in television while waiting for his next chance, which came when new general manager Marc Bergevin hired him to return to the Canadiens at the start of last season. After Montreal, Julien was hired by the New Jersey Devils, but he also fell victim to a surprise firing late in the 2006-07 season despite a 47-24-8 record. The Bruins snapped him up the following season. Wholesale Lions Jerseys . Azarenka needed exactly one hour in a 6-1, 6-0 rout of Austrian Yvonne Meusburger to start the night session at Laver Arena. COLUMBUS, Ohio - While Artem Anisimov has found another level of play, the Blue Jackets are still trying to find how to keep the pressure on as they chase a playoff spot. Anisimov scored twice, including a late insurance goal, as Columbus held off a third-period Dallas rally for a 4-2 win over the Dallas Stars. "Right now might be as good as weve seen him play in a Columbus uniform," Blue Jackets coach Todd Richards said of Anisimov, who has scored five times in the last four games. "Two huge goals for us, especially the last one with the way the game was going." Columbus dug in for its third straight win to climb into a tie for seventh with the Rangers in the Eastern Conference. "Bobs (Sergei Bobrovsky) our last line of defence and its a great last line to have," Richards said. "But as a young team going forward and playing with leads, a 3-0 lead, thats where you want to continue to go after teams." The Blue Jackets are vying for only their second post-season appearance since joining the league in 2000. Columbus scored on the first shot of the game and bolted ahead on first-period goals by Boone Jenner, R.J. Umberger and Anisimov against backup Dan Ellis. Ellis was shaky early in making his first appearance since Feb. 1. "Its not easy," Dallas coach Lindy Ruff said of his goalies long layoff. "I kind of felt for him. The first shot got by him and I think that maybe rattled him a little bit." At the other end, Bobrovsky finished with 31 saves, one on an open shot by Jamie Benn with 5 minutes left with the Blue Jackets clinging to a one-goal lead. Bobrovsky nimbly tracked loose pucks and shots from near the crease all game to improve to 5-0-1 against Dallas. Defencemen Alex Goligoski and Trevor Daley had goals early in the third period for the Stars. With the loss, Dallas, which had won five of seven, still sits in eighth place in the Western Conference. Leading 3-0 entering the final period, Columbus seemed in control even though it had been drastically outshot since taking the big lead near the midpoint of the first. But the Stars finally broke through, scoring about two minutes apart. Goligoski fired home a rebound on the power play from near the crease, his fourth goal and second in as many games after a 48-game drought. Daley followed with his fifth on a redirection from between the circles off a soft point shot by Sergei Gonchar. "Sometimes you are going to get hit with some adversity," Ruff said of his teams slow start. "We were knocking on the door and we had a couple of good opportunities." Dallas kept coming, but Anisimov all but ended it with his 18th at 15:53 on a backhander after circling toward the crease from behind the net with Goligoski on his back. "We wanted to start fast," Umberger said. "We were prepared for a fast game. They get up and down the ice pretty quick. The first period definitely was the reason we won tonight. Bob held the fort for us the rest of the game." The Blue Jackets benefited from one stick-handling flub after another by Dallas defensive corps in the first period. With a fill head of steam, Jenner sent a long snap shot from the left circle into the far corner above Ellis outstretched glove for his 11th. Then the miscues. Aaron Rome then swept the puck off Brandon Dubinskys stick in the slot to a streaking Umberger, who scored his 17th. Just over four minutes later, the Stars Jordie Benn cleared the puck into traffic to teammate Cody Eakin, who bobbled it back toward the net to Anisimov. The big centre turned and sent a backhander past Ellis to make it 3-0. "Hes just stepping up and making big plays," Umberger said of Anisimov. "You can see hes capable, hes confident right now. Hes strong on the puck." The Stars outshot Columbus 12-1 in the second period but didnt have many prime scoring chances other than two by Tyler Seguin on a power play that Bobrovsky smothered. "We had a good first and the second wasnt our strongest period," Jenner said. "I thought we did a good job in the intermission of regrouping, knowing we still had the lead. I thought we had good desperation in the third." Notes: The Stars traded injured D Stephane Robidas to the Ducks on Tuesday for a conditional fourth-round pick. ... Rankings were weighted evenly between separate lists made by TSN Radio host and soccer analyst Gareth Wheeler as well as TSN.cas soccer editors. 1. Liverpool (Last Week -4) Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge were both on target while Steven Gerrard converted a penalty as Liverpool earned a 3-1 victory over Crystal Palace. With the victory, Liverpool gains a share of the top of the table. Suarez has 19 goals in 22 games while Sturridge has 19 in 24 games. 2. Arsenal (LW-1) Jack Wilshere scored a huge goal to rescue a point for his side as Arsenal tied West Brom 1-1. Not surprisingly both Mesut Ozil and Olivier Giroud were key in the Wilshire goal but despite a possession advantage, that was all they could muster in the draw. 3. Chelsea (LW-3) Oscar scored early and Chelsea got two late markers to pick up a 3-1 victory over Norwich City. Eden Hazard and Willian scored the deciding goals after entering the game as second half substitutes to put away the victory. With the victory, Chelsea finds themselves in the top three of the table. 4. Manchester City (LW-6) After giving up the opening marker of the game, Citys offence took over as they cruised to a 3-1 victory. Alvaro Negredo brought the score level just one minute after his team fell behind and Sergio Aguero scored and had a second credited as an own goal to Everton keeper Tim Howard. 5. Southampton (LW-7) The good feelings for the Saints continued as they beat Swansea 2-0 to maintain their place in the top four of the Premier League table. Adam Lallana and Jay Rodriguez provided the scoring for Southampton, who have only been beaten once so far this season. Keeper Artur Boruc was solid when needed in this contest. 6. Tottenham (LW-2) Coming into the second half of a scoreless game against West Ham, Tottenham and their fans could not know what was in store. West Ham rode three second half markers to what turned out to be an easy 3-0 victory over Spurs. The loss is the worst at home during the tenure of head coach Andre Villas-Boas. 7. Manchester United (LW- 8) It only took six minutes for Adnan Januzaj to seize control in Uniteds 2-1 victory over Sunderland. After the home side grabbed an early 1-0 lead, the teenager rescued the win for the champions with his second half brace. Keeper David De Gea was solid when called upon to help his team earn the points. 8. Everton (LW-5) When Romelu Lukaku opened the scoring it looked like Everton was going to cruise to another victory. Unfortunately it was their only high spot in a 3-1 loss to Manchester City, their first loss of the season. Everton was the last unbeaten team in the Premier League. 9. Aston Villa (LW-10) Without Christian Benteke in the lineup, Aston Villa was not able to convert any chances as they drew Hull City 0-0. Andreas Weimann and Gabriel Agbonlahor created chances but they were not able to find the finish to win the game for Villa. Keeper Brad Guzan was not required to make a save in the game. 10. Hull City (LW-9) Despite being out played for large portions of the game, Hull claimed a 0-0 draw against Aston Villa. Keeper Allan McGregor was called on a few times to keep the score level and he answered those calls to earn his side a point. Hulls best sustained pressure came early in the contest but they were not able to find a goal. 11. West Bromwich Albion (LW-111) Claudio Yacob scored a first half marker for the Baggies but they had to settle for a 1-1 draw against Arsenal after giving up a goal in the second half.dddddddddddd Stephane Sessegnon was strong for West Brom who played well in the middle of the park but were not able to find the finish they needed to capture the game. 12. West Ham United (LW-17) In what is surely the upset of the week, West Ham rolled to a 3-0, road victory over Tottenham at White Hart Lane. Winston Reid, Ricardo Vaz Te and Ravel Morrison were responsible for the scoring as the Hammers completely took over the game in the second half. Sam Allardyces side now has one of the signature wins of the season. 13. Newcastle United (LW-16) Loic Remy fired home twice in the first half and Newcastle hung on for a 2-1 victory over Cardiff City. Cardiff actually controlled more of the ball and pulled back their goal in the second half but in the end, it was Newcastle that enjoyed the victory. 14. Swansea City (LW-13) Though they dominated large chunks of the game, Swansea could do nothing but watch Southampton roll to a 2-0 victory. Michu and Wilfried Bony both had chances to get on the scoreboard and Nathan Dyer hit the inside of the post but was not able to find the finish to get his team back into the game. 15. Stoke City (LW-15) Stoke will walk away from their 1-0 loss to Fulham believing they should have at least gained a point from the contest. Twice in the game they thought they were going to be awarded penalties but neither was given. Defender Robert Huth also had a header cleared off the line and Marko Arnautovic shot a clear chance wide of the net. 16. Cardiff City (LW-12) After going two goals down in the first half, Cardiff staged a second half comeback that fell just short as they lost 2-1 to Newcastle. Peter Odemwingie scored in the 58th minute and the Welsh side pressed to the final whistle for the equalizer that never came. 17. Norwich City (LW-14) Keper John Ruddy was not nearly good enough when he needed to be as Norwich fell 3-1 to Chelsea. Anthony Pilkington leveled the score for the Canaries in the 68th minute and they tried to hold on and gain a home point against a top side. They conceded twice in a minute and were forced to go home with nothing from the game. 18. Fulham (LW-18) Substitute Darren Bent fired home the only goal as Fulham beat Stoke City 1-0. The Cottagers picked up their first win since opening day but had to withstand the pressure of Stokes attack to earn the points. Twice it looked as though Fulham had committed penalties but the referee waived away both offences. Keeper David Stockdale earned the clean sheet. 19. Crystal Palace (LW-19) Dwight Gayles 76th minute goal was the only consolation Palace would take away from a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Liverpool. They were dominated from the start of the game, giving up all three goals in the first 38 minutes of play. Palace was able to eventually put pressure on Liverpool leading to the goal, but it was already too late to make a difference. 20. Sunderland (LW-20) It was great start for the Black Cats as they took a 1-0 lead against Manchester United just five minutes into the game through Craig Gardner. Emanuele Giaccherini failed to double the advantage before the half and United turned the game in the second, sending Sunderland to a 2-1 defeat. CHICAGO -- Chris Johnson can rest easy during the All-Star break. He earned a couple days off. Johnson had three hits, including his third homer in two days, and the Atlanta Braves beat the Chicago Cubs 10-7 on Sunday to keep pace with Washington at the top of the NL East. Johnson hit a long drive to straightaway centre field for a three-run shot in a four-run third inning against Travis Wood (7-8). Johnson also went deep twice in the Braves 11-6 victory at Wrigley Field on Saturday. "The biggest thing for me is the fact Im swinging at strikes," he said. "When I swing at strikes, I can do some good things." Atlanta (52-43) has won three of four since a four-game losing streak. It heads into the break one percentage point behind the division-leading Nationals, who won 10-3 at Philadelphia. "We had a pretty good first half, better than pretty good," manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "Now weve got to enjoy this break and come out in the second half and keep firing." The Braves played without struggling second baseman Dan Uggla, who was suspended by the team for the series finale at Chicago. Atlanta announced the punishment on its Twitter feed, with no further explanation, and Gonzalez called it an "internal matter." The last-place Cubs (40-54) have lost eight of 10. Arismendy Alcantara and Chris Coghlan each hit a two-run homer off All-Star Julio Teheran (9-6). It was the first career shot for the 22-year-old Alcantara, who also had a bloop double in the first and is batting .391 (9 for 23) in his first five major league games. "With my ability, Im having fun," Alcantara said. "It can be fast. Im having fun." Chicago scored three times in the eighth, highlighted by John Bakers two-run double, but Jordan Walden got Junior Lake to fly out to centre with a runner on second for the final out of the inning. All-Star Craig Kimbrel then worked the ninth for his 29th save in 33 opportunities. "We put ourselves in a position potentially to even edge closer, and we just fell a little short," Cubs manager Rick Renteria said. Teheran pitched seven innings in his first start since a rough outing against the Mets. The right-hander lasted just 3 1-3 innings in an 8-3 loss at New York on Tuesday. Teheran retired 12 in a row after Chicago put runners on first and second with two out in the first. He allowed seven hits while improving to 2-0 in four career starts against the Cubs. "I know that my last outing I didnt have a good outing," said Teheran, who is ineligible for the All-Star game because he started on Sunday. "Just trying to come back like I did twice this year." Wood was charged with seven runs and seven hits in six innings. The left-hander is 0-3 with a 6.49 ERA in his last five starts. Wood issued leadoff walks in the second, third and fourth innings, and the first two were costly. Gerald Laird had a two-run double in Atlantas three-run second, and Jason Heyward singled home a run before Johnson connected in the third. Johnsons sixth homer was part of his 30th multihit game of the season. The third baseman was walked intentionally in the seventh to get to Tommy La Stella, who doubled home three runs to give the Braves a 10-2 lead. The 34-year-old Uggla has played sparingly since La Stella was promoted from Triple-A Gwinnett on May 28. The three-time All-Star is batting .162 with two homers and 10 RBIs in 48 games. Gonzalez said he expects Uggla to be with the team when it resumes play on Friday night against the Phillies. He also isnt worried about the effect of the suspension on his team. "I dont think so. I got a pretty good pulse of our clubhouse," he said. "If anybody wants to talk to me, my door is always open. And they know that." France always had the match in hand with four tries to two, however Tonga humbled the home defence frequently with all the breaks it made but couldnt make any links to support. Tonga prop Alisona Taumalolo and France lock Yoann Maestri were ejected in the 41st minute for trading punches. It hardly mattered as France was in command at 21-6. "We made small mistakes but the most important thing is to regain confidence with a victory," France fullback Brice Dulin said. "Maybe we got carried away at times. We wanted so much to do well and score tries. We were sometimes a bit messy, but that will boost our morale." After an early penalty, winger Sofiane Guitoune, the Top 14s top try-scorer making his test debut, collected a high ball from Morgan Parra to score an unconverted try in the right corner in the fifth minute. Parra punished more Tonga indiscipline with penalties in the 17th and the 29th for 14-0. The visitors came close to a try in the 22nd, but flanker Sione Kalamafoni ignored two free teammates to his right and lost possession. France started feeling Tongas physical impact at the breakdown. Flanker Thierry Dusautoir failed to roll away after a tackle and Fangatapu Apikotoa landed a penalty from 45 metres in the 31st. The Tonga flyhalf capitalized on a Frenchman offsside in the 37th to cut the deficit to 14-6.dddddddddddd "We were a bit on the backfoot in the first half," Dusautoir said. "We didnt manage to be well organized. They are very strong and we missed a lot of first tackles." On the stroke of halftime, France lock Sebastien Vahaamahina was stopped five meters from the line. Tonga lost its nerve as scrumhalf Taniela Moa was sent to the sin-bin for elbowing hooker Dimitri Szarzewski. No. 8 Damien Chouly relied on Frances powerful scrum to score a converted try for 21-6. The break did not help to cool tempers. Seconds after the restart, Maestri and Taumalolo were red-carded for trading head punches. Maestri, teary-eyed, had words with Taumalolo as he walked off. Guitoune sent Dulin in for another converted try but despite the growing deficit, Tonga kept fighting and created space with a multi-phase buildup that stretched the France defence. A big miss-out pass freed winger Fetuu Vainikolo to slide over in the left corner. Vainikolo conceded the next penalty which Parra goaled, then another rolling maul drove in replacement Benjamin Kayser to secure Frances first win after four defeats to New Zealand. In the last minute, Vainikolo escaped a tackle from a cramping Guitoune to smack the left corner flag as he touched down for his ninth career try. France faces South Africa next Saturday, while Tonga, after a second straight loss in Europe, visits Wales on Friday.
