AT THE TIME of my wish, I was experiencing the effects from a kidney disease known as Alport syndrome, a genetic disease that targets the kidneys and slowly wears away their functionality. Being diagnosed at the age of 8, a little over 13 years ago now, I could not have guessed how such a disease would have such a lifelong impact. By age 15, I started to experience the more severe effects of Alport syndrome such as energy loss, weight loss, my energy level was declining, I was losing weight, and had hearing difficulties. Normal daily routines like school and sports activities started to become a challenge, I had a hard time performing in school and sports due to my lack of hearing, energy, and attentiveness. I first learned about the Make-A-Wish Foundation through my doctors. During my meetings with the wish granters, Stephanie and Joe, I was told, You can do anything you want, seriously, anything. After what seemed like forever, I finally decided what I wanted: to watch a NASCAR race from the pits with the hopes of meeting my favorite driver, Dale Earnhardt Jr.My wish started in May 2010 with a visit to a local go-kart track. Here I am supposedly watching a safety video for the go-karts when out of nowhere Dale Earnhardt Jr. appears on the screen, inviting me to North Carolina to race go-karts and watch the All-Star race at Charlotte Motor Speedway. I was so excited that the video actually had to play twice before I grasped the reality of what had just happened. The day came for me to meet Dale, and what I thought was going to be a simple meet and greet turned into something unimaginable. We arrived on Dales property where I was greeted with open arms by a guy I had seen only on TV. After a tour, it was finally time -- time to race those go-karts. Following my sweeping victory (or maybe it was a photo finish), I was crowned the winner. At this point, I thought my wish was officially granted and had come to an end. Not even close. The next thing I know, I am on my way to Dales race shop. But Im not riding in our car, oh no, Im riding with Dale in his car. After a quick tour of the shop and some pizza for lunch, Dale invites me to be part of his pit crew and watch the All-Star race from atop the pitbox. Race day arrives and I am given a tour of the track by the Charlotte Motor Speedway president and Dales crew chief. After meeting racing legends Richard Petty and Jimmy Johnson, it was time to walk on stage with Dale. Walking out from behind that curtain and seeing hundreds of thousands of lights was hands down the most memorable time of my life.Six months after my amazing experience with Make-A-Wish, I was told my kidneys could no longer function on their own and I would need to start dialysis treatments. I spent the next four months going to dialysis and countless doctor visits, but not once did I ever forget about my wish and all the amazing messages I received from people around the world who saw me on the My Wish series on ESPN. On Feb. 22, 2011, I received a kidney transplant from my older sister Jen, and on this day, my worries were over.Today, I am a student at Husson University, where I am finishing my fourth year as a Business Management major. I continue to be involved with the Make-A-Wish Foundation and sharing my story. Although I will forever live with Alport syndrome, I am enjoying life to the fullest and focusing on my future. LOUIS -- Heading into the final stretch of the season, the issues for the Chicago Bears banged-up defence only seem to be getting worse. LONDON -- Without a doubt, Andy Murray will be the No. 1 player in the world for the rest of the year. The Wimbledon champion needed to win the final match of the season to ensure his place at the top. And he did it, rather easily.Murray beat Novak Djokovic 6-3, 6-4 Sunday to earn his first title at the ATP finals, and make sure he remained No. 1 until next season.I would like to try and stay there, obviously. Its taken a huge effort the last five, six months to get there, said Murray, who took over the top ranking two weeks ago and has now won 24 straight matches.Im aware thats going to be extremely difficult because I had a great year this year. I only managed to do it by one match.Murray replaced Djokovic as the top-ranked player in Paris, but the second-ranked Serb could have regained the No. 1 position by winning Sunday at the O2 Arena. And Murray seemed vulnerable heading into the final, especially after playing three sets against Milos Raonic in Saturdays semifinals. He started against Djokovic with a pair of double-faults in the opening game, but it was soon his opponent that was struggling with his serve as the unforced errors piled up.There was no serious chance for me to win todays match, Djokovic said. From the very beginning we could see that. He was just a better player all in all.Normally so steady with his groundstrokes, Djokovic found himself missing easy shots time after time, finishing the match with a whopping 30 unforced errors and only 13 winners. Murray had 15 unforced errors and 13 winners. In the first set, Djokovic had a routine smash that he whacked wide. And in the second, he netted a basic forehand volley. It never got much better for the 12-time Grand Slam champion, who was trying to win a record-tying sixth title at the season-ending tournament and finish the year as the top-ranked player for the fifth time.II didnt do much from my side.ddddddddddddEvery time I would get an opportunity, I would miss, said Djokovic, who completed a career Grand Slam by winning the French Open this year.Murray is the first man other than Djokovic, Roger Federer or Rafael Nadal to finish the year as the No. 1-ranked player since Andy Roddick in 2003.He took over the top spot on Nov. 7 after winning his eighth title of the season at the Paris Masters. He also reached the Australian Open and French Open finals, losing to Djokovic on both occasions, but won his second straight Olympic gold medal in singles at the Rio de Janeiro Games after claiming his second Wimbledon title. On Sunday, he capped a long stretch of playing some of the best tennis of his life, and the best tennis in the world.I was solid enough when I needed to be, Murray said, perhaps understating his accomplishment. You never beat a player as good as Novak if you dont play well.Sundays match was the first time since 2000 that the year-end No. 1 ranking was on the line in the final match of the season. Sixteen years ago, Gustavo Kuerten beat Andre Agassi to give the Brazilian the top ranking ahead of Marat Safin.Despite winning the opening two Grand Slam tournaments this year, Djokovic has struggled in the second half of the season. He lost to Sam Querrey in the third round at Wimbledon, ending a 30-match winning streak at major championships. He later lost to Stan Wawrinka in the U.S. Open final.Well, the last five, six months have not been ideal, Djokovic said. But sometimes its just normal, I guess, to experience, to live these kind of things, not to have the half seasons as well as you want them to be, as well as theyve been in the last three, four years. Thats all. ' ' '
