Hockey Canada hopes to finalize plans for its Olympic orientation camp in August, but theres no certainty that players will be able to skate because of insurance issues. Hockey Canada president and CEO Bob Nicholson said no determination has been made yet on whether players will be able to skate, but called it "difficult" based on the price of insuring all NHL contracts. "Insurance is a big issue," Nicholson said in an interview Friday. "We got some quotes yesterday that it would be over a million dollars to skate. So if its that type of dollars, itd be very difficult for us to do that. But were just starting to look into that now with the agreement being done." While the agreement to send NHL players to the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, takes care of insurance during the tournament, individual federations are responsible for insuring contracts for orientation camps. Nicholson said his hope was for Canada to begin camp Aug. 25 in Calgary. USA Hockeys camp is scheduled for Aug. 25-29 at the Washington Capitals practice facility in Arlington, Va., and a spokesman confirmed players will not skate. Nicholson expects Canadas camp invites and the announcement of the coaching staff to happen in the coming days. Mike Babcock of the Detroit Red Wings will reportedly be back as head coach, joined by assistants Claude Julien of the Boston Bruins, Ken Hitchcock of the St. Louis Blues and Lindy Ruff of the Dallas Stars. USA Hockey already named Dan Bylsma of the Pittsburgh Penguins its head coach and David Poile of the Nashville Predators its general manager. While Canada has not announced its coaching staff, preparations for Sochi have been underway for some time. "Theres been lots of planning," Nicholson said. "(General manager) Steve Yzerman and the management group have been evaluating players all year. Were in good shape. Were right on schedule for our planning purposes." While some players figure to be locks, many roster decisions will take place early in the 2013-14 NHL season. "I think a lot has to do with the first half of this year," said Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby, who scored the gold-medal-winning goal for Canada in 2010. "Thats going to dictate a lot, and I think everybody always talks about different combinations and the possibilities. With Canada theres so many guys who could play for that team, but I think that the first half of the season will obviously have a big bearing on that, and well see who kind of starts well and gets those opportunities." Olympic rosters are due by Dec. 31, so Canadas team might not take shape until well into the season. "Thatll all be really figured out in December," Nicholson said. "Weve got such great depth, well have to see whos playing best in the month of December." RIO DE JANEIRO -- Tijana Boskovic covered her face and cried for joy in the aftermath of her teams thrilling semifinal upset of the top-ranked Americans, overcome by the improbable accomplishment for a country that has never been among the world volleyball powers.Serbia has already made history for womens volleyball back home, and now these women will bring the programs first medal back from Brazil. They want it to be gold. They have gotten this far, why not shoot for the tip-top step of the podium?Especially with both two-time defending champion Brazil and the No. 1 Americans out of the mix. Serbia will face China, which played in the same preliminary pool and beat the Netherlands in a four-set semifinal.China coach Jenny Lang Ping could become the first person to win gold as a player and a coach. We will give it our best but for sure after this semifinal you can see that our group was much harder, Serbia middle blocker Milena Rasic said. Brazil is out, Russia is out, USAs out. Its really an amazing feeling. Now, just one more win. The Serbians already had beaten the U.S. at last years World Cup in Japan that helped force the Americans to play a second-chance qualifier at Lincoln, Nebraska, in January to earn a berth to Rio de Janeiro. This one was so much sweeter -- at the Olympics in a match nobody figured they would win. What can I say after this game? Serbia coach Zoran Terzic said. I dont have words, because this is a historical moment for Serbian volleyball, for everybody in Serbia for the first Olympic medal in our history. We are very happy, very prroud, especially we win against maybe the best team in the world at this moment.dddddddddddd It was an amazing game for us. What can I say? Very happy, very proud, very satisfied. The mens team didnt reach the Rio Games, so the women are leaving their imprint on Brazil and the world stage. At long last. And the women werent sure how they would secure their trip here until that impressive showing at World Cup a year ago. Now, its final, its beginning now, Tijana Malesevic said. We have one day to rest, and to prepare and to celebrate a little bit because we did a great job. But for sure we will not stop on this one, were going to make it further. For the inexperienced China team, each step through the tournament has helped the players gain confidence and comfort playing at the Olympic level. Beating the Brazilians at home sure helped and meant so much. The mindset is the most important thing, Ding Xia said. The skills are not important anymore at this point in the tournament because the matches are so crucial. After we defeated Brazil now everybody is in a mindset of just doing our best. Both the confidence and morale is up and that makes our skills better.Serbia doesnt want to get this close and go home without the top prize.Im so happy and Im so satisfied, so proud of my team, Serbia captain Maja Ognjenovic said. I dont know what to say. Right now Im full of emotions. Really this is historic success for womens Serbian volleyball. ' ' '
