CHICAGO -- The Los Angeles Dodgers made two changes to their National League Championship Series roster on Saturday, adding left-handed pitcher Alex Wood and infielder/outfielder Enrique Hernandez?for the best-of-7 series against the?Chicago Cubs. The moves increase the Dodgers pitching staff from 11 members in the NLDS to 12, reducing their position players by one since both infielder Charlie Culberson and catcher Austin Barnes will not be active for the upcoming round. The Cubs, meanwhile, will also carry 12 pitchers as they added rookie left-hander Rob Zastryzny, who takes the place of infielder Tommy La Stella.Game 1 of the NLCS is Saturday night at Wrigley Field.Wood gives the Dodgers more left-handed coverage in the bullpen to go along with lefty relievers Luis Avilan, and Grant Dayton. Hernandez gives the club defensive versatility, as well as a way for the Dodgers to counter the one left-handed starter and four left-handed relievers the Cubs will use in the series.Hernandez did not perform well this past season, batting .190 with a .283 on-base percentage. But he batted .423 against lefties last season and has shown flashes of his ability against left-handed pitching this year when he hit two home runs in a April 15 game against the Giants Madison Bumgarner.Hernandez also started a June 1 game against the Cubs and left-hander Jon Lester, hitting a first-inning home run. Lester will start for the Cubs in Game 1 of the NLCS on Saturday. Hernandez also started an Aug. 28 game against Lester and the Cubs, but went hitless in two at-bats.Wood missed most of this season after undergoing an arthroscopic procedure on his left elbow. He began the year as a starter, but he returned to make four relief appearances in September, all scoreless. He gave up just one hit in those four innings of work.Culberson appeared in four of the five NLDS games against Washington, but he did not have a hit in seven at-bats. He had the game-ending home run on Sept. 25 that clinched the division for the Dodgers.Barnes was the Dodgers third catcher in the NLDS. He went 0-for-1, scoring a run as a pinch runner. His main contribution was as a catching insurance policy, freeing up No. 2 catcher Carlos Ruiz to pinch hit. Ruiz ended up going 2-for-4 in the NLDS, delivering the go-ahead RBI single in the seventh inning of the deciding Game 5.Zastryzny went 1-0 with a 1.13 ERA in eight games for the Cubs this year, including 3? scoreless innings at Dodger Stadium on Aug. 27. The Cubs will be carrying three catchers. The move puts four left-handers in the Cubs bullpen. The Dodgers hit .213 against lefty pitching this year. The Associated Press contributed to this report.
