HOCKENHEIM, Germany -- Nico Rosberg edged Lewis Hamilton to the fastest time of the final practice session for the German Grand Prix as Red Bull and Ferrari closed the gap to Mercedes ahead of qualifying.Rosberg held a slender 0.057s advantage over Hamilton at the end of the session after both drivers set times on the super-soft tyres with 20 minutes remaining in the session. Daniel Ricciardo and Kimi Raikkonen set their times towards the end of the session when track conditions were marginally better, with the Red Bull driver managing to cut the gap to Rosberg to just 0.099s.However, Mercedes lap times may not tell the full story as neither driver improved on Rosbergs first practice time, which remains the fastest lap of the weekend so far. Combined with the early hot lap, it appears as though Mercedes was focusing on race pace in FP3 rather than worrying about the gap to its competitors over one lap. Ricciardo was the fastest driver in the middle sector, which includes the circuits longest straight, but that advantage may be reversed once Mercedes switches its engines to qualifying mode this afternoon.Of greater immediate concern for Mercedes, was an unsafe release of Lewis Hamilton in front of Romain Grosjean in the pit lane. Although second guessing stewards decisions is rarely advisable, it is worth noting that a reprimand for Hamilton would bring his total number of reprimands this season to three and result in a 10-place grid penalty. Daniil Kvayt was reprimanded for an unsafe release at the Belgian Grand Prix last year, but only because the stewards judged that he specifically did not pay attention to oncoming traffic.Raikkonen was among the drivers who waited until the end of the session for a hot lap and in doing so beat teammate Sebastian Vettel by 0.202s. Unlike Raikkonen, Vettel set his lap earlier in the session and then completed a long-run at the end on super-softs before returning to the pits with a loose front wing.Max Verstappen was sixth fastest after also going out early for his quick lap and finished the session ahead of the two Williamses, which ended up as the fourth best team in seventh and eighth.
