SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Carolina Panthers Pro Bowl defensive tackle Kawann Short says he is willing to play under the final year of his rookie contract if a long-term extension cant be reached before the end of training camp. Its not about the contract, the 2013 second-round pick said on Wednesday after reporting to training camp at Wofford College. I started up with this team and I love the Carolina Panthers. I love the organization. Hopefully, things will get done.Short, who tied Cincinnatis Geno Atkins for the most sacks (11) by a defensive tackle last season, is scheduled to make just over $1 million this season.Based on recent extensions by Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Fletcher Cox and New York Jets defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson, the going rate for a player of Shorts caliber is $17.2 million a year. The Panthers are believed to be offering Short somewhere between $13 and $15 million a year.Short smiled when asked about the Cox and Wilkerson deals.Just to see those guys rewarded like that, its a blessing, he said. Those guys have been working hard. They deserved it. Im happy to see they got it.Asked if he considered himself along the same caliber as Cox and Wilkerson, Short said, Im working to that level.Short reported for a three-day minicamp in June and never hedged on reporting to training camp. He sat out two weeks of non-mandatory workouts, his only leverage in negotiations. Its a process, said Short, the first time hes discussed his situation since skipping organized team activities. Weve got to go through it. Im just here to play football now.Asked whether this put him in an uncomfortable situation, Short said: Uncomfortable? Its a good uncomfortable. You want to be in this position, but you also want to get things done. Its going to take time, and Im patient.A year ago, cornerback Josh Norman turned down a long-term extension when the Panthers didnt offer a deal to his liking. He said during training camp he was betting on himself.Norman made the Pro Bowl, then had the franchise tag placed on him when a deal couldnt be made after the Super Bowl. The Panthers later rescinded the tag, and Norman signed with the Washington Redskins.Short wouldnt go so far as to say he was betting on himself.Thats a whole different guy. Thats a whole different character, he said of Norman. I cant really put myself in his shoes and what he went through. Everybody is different. I wouldnt say. Custom Basketball Jerseys Outlet . AUSTIN, Texas --?Texas Longhorns?coach Charlie Strong is keeping his big secret until game day.Strong on Monday declined to say will start at quarterback when the Longhorns face No. 10?Notre Dame?on Sunday in their 2016 season?opener, declaring only that he already knows who will it will be. His choices are freshman Shane Buechele or senior Tyrone Swoopes. The only thing he will promise right now is that both are going to play.Buechele was the standout during spring practice but Swoopes has starting experience over the past two seasons. Its a critical decision for the third-year coach who is 11-14 after two seasons and facing intense pressure to turn the program around and get Texas back to a bowl game. The decision has swirled around the program for months, yet Strong kept deflecting about a dozen quarterback questions in his weekly news conference. He laughed as they became more repetitive. He also sent some mixed signals. Strong said both Buechele and Swoopes will play, but one of them will be the clear starter. When we name the QB he is our starter and he will be our starter, Strong said, unless he gets beat out.And then theres the experience factor. Strong loves to praise Buecheles work ethic as a young player, using the basketball teerm gym rat to describe his passion for the game.ddddddddddddThen he notes that as a freshman, Buechele hasnt been here in the spotlight of a nationally televised game between two storied programs.Swoopes has. It didnt go well. After starting most of 2014 when Texas went 6-7, Swoopes beat out Jerrod Heard to the earn the start in the 2015 season-opener at Notre Dame. Texas lost 38-3 and Swoopes lost his job and didnt get it back until Heard got injured late in the season as the Longhorns finished 5-7.Texas hired new offensive coordinator Sterlin Gilbert, giving all the quarterbacks a fresh start. Buechele made the most of it by enrolling early and participating in spring drills. He emerged -- at least publicly -- as the favorite to start this season with 299 yards passing a pair of touchdowns in one half of the spring scrimmage. But clearly Swoopes has done enough behind closed-door practices to make a case to be the senior starter.Strong said his team will know who the starter is this week even if the fans dont.We really have no idea, linebacker Malik Jefferson said. We go to practice every day and see both. ' ' '
